A little background knowledge goes a long way
The National Motor Freight Association (NMTA) established the standard for freight identification and classification to provide a consistent comparison of freight commodities. Commodities are grouped into one of 18 classes based on the shipment’s density, handling, stowability and liability. Together, these four characteristics establish a commodity’s transportability and associated LTL shipping rate.
How does density factor into it all?
Density is the ratio of weight compared to volume. It is important that you get accurate shipment measurements in order to calculate your freight class density, or you could be at risk for reclassification.
What if my bill of lading is wrong?
The accuracy of your bill of lading is entirely dependent on how you classify your LTL freight. If your bill of lading includes mistakes, your shipment is subject to additional fees and delivery delays.
